The building emptied at six, and Nadia stayed behind, ostensibly to finish logging the week's samples. In truth she wanted the spreadsheet to herself. Mercury concentrations from the Vance Creek monitoring wells marched down the column in tidy increments, and every value terminated at a clean second decimal — 0.19, 0.18, 0.19 — which was not how the analyser reported anything. She opened the raw export beside it, glancing at the corridor's frosted glass out of habit. The comparison she made then felt surreptitious in a way that embarrassed her, as though curiosity about her own laboratory's numbers were a species of trespass.

By Monday she had a reason to be at the instrument bench that nobody could question. The atomic absorption spectrometer was hers to maintain; she was the one who had to calibrate it each Tuesday against standards of known concentration, then sign the log. She pulled the logbook down and read backwards. Twelve weeks of entries in Dr. Halloran's narrow hand, every drift correction within tolerance, every signature identical. The machine, in other words, had been honest. Whatever was happening to the numbers was happening after they left the detector, somewhere between the export file and the report that went to the county.

She needed the two versions side by side, and neither the instrument software nor the departmental template would do it for her. So she began to collate: raw exports from the spectrometer's hard drive, the intermediate workbooks on the shared server, the PDFs archived for the county, and the field sheets in Ravi's handwriting recording the hour each bottle was drawn. Four sources, four incompatible date formats, one obstinate afternoon with the blinds down. When the columns finally aligned at half past seven, the pattern she saw was not dramatic. It was worse than dramatic. It was perfectly consistent.

The work that followed was painstaking in a way nobody would ever thank her for. Each sample had to be traced from bottle to bench to spreadsheet cell, and wherever a value had been revised she had to establish when the change occurred and which account had made it. The shared drive kept version histories, mercifully, though they were buried three menus deep. She took her notes in pencil, in a notebook she carried home in her bag each night. By Thursday she had reconstructed ninety-one samples. Eighty-three had been adjusted downward, never by much, never upward, not once.

Individually the edits were trivial — three hundredths here, four there, the sort of thing a tired analyst might call rounding and forget by lunchtime. The cumulative effect was another matter entirely. Averaged across the quarter, the reported mercury load for Vance Creek sat at 0.184 milligrams per litre. Nadia's reconstruction put it at 0.223. The regulatory ceiling, the figure that determined whether Corbin Plating kept its discharge permit and its two hundred jobs, was 0.200. Nobody had falsified a single spectacular result. Somebody had shaved eighty-three modest ones, patiently, until the quarter agreed to behave.

She sat with the word a long time before permitting herself to use it. To tamper with statutory monitoring data was not a lapse or a shortcut; it was a criminal matter, with a statute number and a sentencing range, and she had met Dr. Halloran's wife at the Christmas dinner in December. He had hired her when nobody else returned her calls. He had written the reference that secured her fellowship interview. Nadia looked at the notebook, then at the darkened window above the car park, and understood that she had already decided something, and was merely waiting for her nerve to catch up.

On Friday she took Ravi for coffee and offered him a hypothetical about a friend at another laboratory. He stirred his cup and let her finish the whole clumsy performance. "You're asking whether I'd vouch for the veracity of our quarterly returns," he said. "I collect the bottles. I don't touch the spreadsheet." Then, after a considered pause: "But Halloran reopened the March workbook twice after I'd closed it. I only noticed because the file kept telling me it was locked for editing." He would not put that in writing. He had a visa, a daughter in nursery, and no appetite whatsoever for martyrdom.

Halloran did not deny anything. He gestured her into the chair opposite and spoke as though explaining a routine procedure to a student. Analytical judgment, he said, was the prerogative of the senior scientist whose signature appeared on the report; the raw output was noisy, the wells were shallow, and a single storm event could skew an entire quarter. "I corrected for known interference. That isn't fraud, Nadia, that's competence." She asked why the corrections had never once pushed a value upward. He regarded her for perhaps four seconds. Then he mentioned that her fellowship reference was due at the end of the month.

That evening she reread the quarterly report properly, all sixty pages, and found the sentence she had skimmed a dozen times without registering. On page four, in six-point type beneath the summary table, sat a solitary caveat: values reflect interference-adjusted concentrations; methodology available on request. Nobody had ever requested it. The county reviewer covered eleven districts on a contractor's salary and allowed himself forty minutes per file. The line was not quite a lie, then. It was a door deliberately left ajar, so that if anyone ever came asking, Halloran could insist he had told them exactly where to look.

The state hotline accepted anonymous reports, but anonymity would not survive contact; only three people could have compiled what she held, and just one of them was junior enough to be comfortably disbelieved. She weighed it for two days. A discrepancy of 0.039 milligrams per litre, in a creek where children fished off the culvert bridge every summer — did that warrant demolishing a career she had spent seven years assembling? At eleven on Sunday night she photographed ninety-one pages of pencil notes, attached the raw exports, and typed the reviewer's name into the address line. Then, before her hands could argue, she sent it.
